The Palazzo Farrattini, still after almost 500 years a private residence of the Farrattini family, preserves the feeling of it’s dynastic heritage. It is placed in the historical centre of Amelia, a medieval town in Umbria, which has preserved the charm of it’s past.
Among the small streets with their artisans’ workshops, typical restaurants and shops, the impressive façade of the palazzo Farrattini stands out, a project of the famous 16th century architect Antonio da Sangallo the younger. Sangallo, also the architect of the Palazzo Farnese in Rome and as well as Medeci villas in Florence, built the Palazzo Farrattini on the ruins of the ancient Roman baths of Amelia of which the original Roman mosaic floors can still be seen in the cellars of the palazzo.
Entering from the street one passes through the impressive foyer before exiting the back of the palazzo which offers a panoramic view of the Umbrian countryside amongst the olive and fruit trees of the palazzo’s property.
Ascending the staircase with it’s signs of being used for five-hundred years one arrives to the “piano nobile” or noble floor with it’s reception rooms and bedrooms. The largest of these rooms, the Salon Sangallo has carved wooden ceilings 25 feet high, a large marble fireplace with the family crest and the walls with frescos done in 1574 for the marriage of Francesco Farrattini and Plantilla Pojani. The other rooms of the piano nobile, the “room of the emperors” with the walls and ceilings painted in the neo-classical style, the “Cardinal’s room with the original chandelier and the “Bishop’s room” with the bust of bishop Baldo Farrattini are all to be visited during a stay at the palazzo. Also on the piano nobile are the three elegant bedrooms available as a bed and breakfast. The “Red room” dedicated to Caterina De’Medici for the role that Bishop Bartolomeo II had in the marriage of the niece of Pope Clemente VII and Enrico II, the future king of France, the “Green room” dedicated to Bartolomeo IV Farrattini, Cavaliere of the order of St. Stefano and the “Room of the Muses” dedicated to the arts and nature.
The gardens and grounds of the palazzo as well as the parking and access to the town all offer an enjoyable stay in Amelia and the Palazzo Farrattini.
