‘Hodi Hodi’ is the traditional Swahili greeting when entering a house and announcing your presence. The reply is always ‘Karibu!’ - Welcome. Hodi Hodi is all about switching off: leisurely days and a good night’s sleep. The breeze in the palm trees, fresh tropical fruit, the smell of sunblock, soft starry nights, long walks on the beach, chilling with a good book, and relaxing around the pool with friends and family. Hodi Hodi started as a private house, Dua House, completed in 2010, and was used for years as a holiday home and weekend retreat from the bustle of Stone Town. Then in 2014 Hodi Hodi was built and open for business– extending Dua House to add 2 more villas, Poa House and Dogo House, containing 4 more rooms and family suites, and offering a bar restaurant and pool.
Food is a passion; we make the most of the bounty provided by the tropical landscape. We might surprise you with playful fusions from Andalucia, Morocco, Southern India and the Middle East, set in a pallet of our Zanzibari spices. Everything is cooked fresh daily, and we reduce packaging and recycle. You'll also see of course that water and power are used with care.

We respect our place in the village community - the village of Matemwe Kilima Juu benefits from our buy-local, employ-local policy. Village boatmen and taxi drivers provide our transport. Our security team is backed up by a volunteer group of village youths. Rubbish is collected by donkey cart. We have an arrangement with the primary school to receive learning gifts from our guests. The village council is consulted before we make decisions. We dress demurely in the village and towns in respect of the local Muslim traditions.
The ocean is perfect for swimming in at any level of tide due to a natural lagoon directly offshore. It also brings jetsam for village beachcombers looking for fuel, and a living for the fishers and the seaweed farmers. We leave the shells on the beach where they belong and buy sustainably caught fish. The ever-present muted Roar of the Reef on the distant horizon serves as a permanent reminder that we are brief guests on these shores - and that nature is ultimately and always fully in charge.
