South Africa Country Guest House Historic Home in Tulbagh.
Our Country Guest House was established in 1999. The guesthouse can accommodate up to twelve people in five en-suite bedrooms and suites. The guesthouse is situated in a 200-year-old manor house that was built in 1809 and retains all of its original features.
The guesthouse manor is a classic ‘H-shaped’ house, the epitome of grand Cape Dutch living, and has been beautifully restored to its former glory, and is situated on Tulbagh’s historic Church Street. The owners of the guesthouse have taken great care to retain the authentic atmosphere of this lovely home with its yellow-wood floors, ceilings and grand rooms, as well as the antiques and art that are on display throughout the guesthouse and in all the rooms.
The Country Guest House offers three king-sized luxury en-suite rooms, as well as a Family Suite that sleeps four people in two rooms, with an en-suite bathroom. Also available at the guesthouse is a single suite with en-suite shower and toilet. All mattresses in the guesthouse are of the highest quality and our linen is 100% cotton percale. Most of the guesthouse’s rooms have private doors onto the garden and pool and guests are encouraged to make free use of all guesthouse facilities including the covered terrace braai / barbecue area.
We have 6 beautifully appointed rooms as follows:
- The Honeymoon Suite: This is the guesthouse’s deluxe king-size room, with a king-size 4-poster bed, in addition to a single ‘day’ bed. The room is opulently and tastefully decorated with art and antiques, and is furnished with a large cupboard, dressing table, and sofa area, and is fully equipped as standard.
The ensuite bathroom boasts under floor heating, a honeymoon-sized bathtub and a separate shower.
- The Executive Suite: This king-size room in the guesthouse has a queen-size bed, and a single daybed. The room is tastefully decorated in a Country-style with art and antiques, and is furnished with a wardrobe, dressing table and a sofa/lounge area, and is fully equipped as per standard.
The en-suite shower/wet room is outfitted with antique brass taps and handmade tiles, and has a private door opening onto the garden and pool.
- The Family Suite: has a queen size bed, 1 Three Quarter bed, & Sleeper Couch, and a full en-suite bathroom.
- The Twin Queen Suite: The queen room has a queen bed plus an extra single bed. The en suite has a walk-in shower and the room is also equipped with a TV.
- The Garden Shed: The guesthouse’s standard double room is ideal for singles, although double occupancy is negotiable. It has a Victorian brass double bed, small wardrobe, coffee table and sofa.
The en-suite shower room and toilet is beautifully decorated with handmade blue and white tiles.
- The Wagon Shed: The original wagon shed of the Manor House is a lovely conversion that retains the charm of its original purpose, with a thatched roof and a high reed ceiling. Heavy wooden doors with forged hinges open onto an inner set of windows. The unit consists of an open plan living/lounge area with a sofa set, yellow-wood supper table, antique French wardrobe and has a beautiful queen-sized, extra length 4-poster bed.
The fully equipped kitchenette is perfect for light meals and is equipped with a microwave, hot plate, kettle, toaster and fridge. The charming en-suite bath and shower room is decorated with handmade blue-and-white tiles, and Victorian finishes. The extra length bath is perfect for winter soaks, and the separate open shower is ideal for cooling off in the summer.
The Wagon Shed has its own veranda with a small private garden that looks onto Tulbagh’s historic Church Street. It’s perfect for a BBQ or enjoying a warm Tulbagh evening under the vines. Guests have full use of the pool, deck, gardens and roof terrace.
Our beautiful neo-classically inspired swimming pool is a life saver after a hot summer’s day. The pool lapa/covered pool terrace seats 12 comfortably and features large day beds, relaxing sofas and thick padded upholstery. Equipped with a book and a glass of wine, it’s tempting to spend the entire day there. The braai/BBQ is beautifully built out of local stone and may be used freely by guests.
Beautiful gardens lead through to shady courtyard spaces and calm sitting areas. Inspired by a dry river bed, our back garden is planted with Buchu, Restio and other indigenous plants. The garden is a haven for birds and attracts over 15 species, including the Cape Hummingbird and Cape Robin.
Enjoy our sunny roof terrace, providing spectacular 360° views of the valley over the thatch roofs of Tulbagh and the mountains and valleys beyond.
Our accommodation offers free Wi-Fi and full office facilities (laptop, fax, copy, scan, phone), all available for our guests and business travellers.
We are situated in the middle of old Tulbagh village, and nestled between two museums. The old Cape Dutch road of Church Street runs along the front of the Quarter, and the more modern Victorian High Street with the town center runs along the back. Most places of interest and restaurants are located within a few minutes walk from us, and the top five Tulbagh wine farms are only a 5-minute drive away.
Tulbagh is 120 km north west of Cape Town, hidden within the beautiful Breede River valley, below the peak of the Groot Winterhoek Mountain, the start of the mighty Cedarburg range. Tulbagh is in the Cape Winelands and has its very own wine route – The Tulbagh Wine Route. The town is also the start of the famous Route 62, which stretches 160 km through the valley to Montague, and then on through the Karoo to Oudtshoorn.

We stayed in the honeymoon suite , even though we have been married for many years. It had a very large four poster bed and was beautifully furnished and absolute luxury, The house itself was also beautiful with a large lounge and a dining room with amazing decor. It was like going back in time.Opening the front door in the morning and looking over Church street and watching everyone go by was lovely. Jayson, the owner was very friendly and helpful.
