Paternoster, a picturesque fishing village on the West Coast of South Africa, with white-washed fishermen’s’ cottages and beautiful beaches, is a popular destination for both local and overseas visitors. The village is 145 km north of Cape Town, between Saldanha and St Helena Bay.
The Cape Columbine Nature Reserve is close by, with the last manually controlled lighthouse in SA, and the well-known camping and fishing spot, Tietiesbaai. Whales and dolphins can frequently be seen just beyond the breakers, and seals and penguins are regular visitors to the large boulders along the coastline. Prolific birdlife makes this a bird-watchers paradise. Rock lobster, for which Paternoster is renowned, can be bought from the fishing boats as they return to shore. Bokkoms, or dried fish, are another unusual local treat.
Sporting activities include kitesurfing, snorkelling, kayaking, golf and swimming. Cycling around the village or a lazy stroll on the beach is popular with the less energetic!
Springtime sees this area, part of the famous Namaqualand region, transformed into a colourful sea of flowers.
Gastronomic delights await visitors to Paternoster at one of its many excellent restaurants.

We arrived early but were welcomed by Barbara. Our room the Lookout was spacious, light , airy, comfortable and private. The breakfasts are delicious, a different menu every day. Barbara had reserved tables for us at different restaurants for the 3 nights we were there and all three were excellent I am sure we would not have got in to the restaurants if she had not pre booked for us. Our visit was only marred for me by the fact that I managed to destroy one of their chairs, even this did not seem to phase our hosts for which I would like to thank them,

My husband and I stayed here in February for a friends' wedding and it was gorgeous. Beautiful views, charming hosts and a really lovely setting - great for walks on the beach and exploring the coast.
